Kyawazaru Schools
Lack of clean water and poor nutrition have had serious impacts on student health and have significantly impeded the academic performance of students at this underserviced rural school. Absentee rates are high due in part to poor student health, so students tend to perform poorly on national examinations.
iCAN and OnMission have identified this school as one at which the WELL program could significantly improve student health and boost academic performance.
In 2022, we invested over $53,000 to drill deep water wells, install solar pumps, 10,000L of reserve water tanks and to begin construction of staff quarters. Though central Tanzania has been suffering a sever drought, these installations are “highly productive” producing “clear potable” water. Two staff have been hired to begin managing the water resources, establish orchards and gardens and teach agroforestry/conservation farming techniques in conjunction with the Farm Innovation Centre near Musoma.
Water and produce from these installations will benefit both students at nearby schools and the local community. The immediate community impact of this program have already been noted. In the longer term we expect to document improvement in community health and the academic performance of the students.
